Weiners. Foot-longs. Red-hots. We want to know what you call them in your neck of the woods or corner of the world. And what's the popular topping for a dog where you come from? I know we ain't all using mustard...

Dodger Stadium

Most people probably know that at Dodger Stadium they are called "Dodger Dogs" but did you know that of all ball parks, Dodger Stadium sells the most?!

I haven't lived in Georgia long enough to know the history, but I've had an “Atlanta Dog” that is served with chili, coleslaw and onions.

According to the National Hot Dog Council (!) :
More hot dogs will be eaten at New York's Yankee Stadium - 1.8 million in 2003 - than in any other major league ballpark in the country!

Since were only half way through 2003 this must be an estimate... I guess NY and LA could battle it out!

Go NY!

History

Postby G gingold » Wed Jul 30, 2003 7:44 pm

OK I hate to sound that old man of the mountain but here is the true story. Harry M Stevens really invented the hot dog at the Polo Grounds where the NY Giants played. He had the franchise to see them at Ebbets Field (Brooklyn Dodgers), Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds. ARA services (now ARAMark), bought him out in recent times which I call the 60's or 70's) His original recipe is perhaps dead . However, sometime in early 60's along comes Ball Park Franks which taste exactly like those bought at Ebbet's Field. Recipe stolen? They are best served with Goulden's spicy Brown Mustard originally only offered at the ballpark. At the A and P only Goulden's Brown was available (now not made).
Mathan Handwerker sold his hot dogs at half price added garlic and had actors dressed as doctors hawking them. The original Nathan's hot Dog is only available at Johnny Rockets Hamburger., The one Nathan sells now is half the size of the original. Rather than brag about them, I say they are an example of a failed company. Not only their hto dogs and fries where the best but their hamburgers far surpassed Wetson's (which they bought out and McDonald's)/ They sold great Pizza and a lobster roll etc. (Today's "lobster roll" is thin with tons of bun and nothing like the orginal). Had they advertised and grown they would be today's McDonals. They stunk as businessmen. Even today the new owners are horrible. Rather than accent Nathan's great choices they bought Kenny Roger's chicken, Miami subs and aurthur treacher's fish and chips. What a waste since the original Nathan recipes far supass all the other franchised junk; and they still don't advertise!! Very Pedestrian. Their original corn on the cob, lobster roll, claims fried shrimp (not the shrimp they serve today), hamburgers, fries and Corned Beef were the best.

Next Nedick's hot dogs were great. had an orange drink and a relish mustard sauce that ws fabulous. They all died but a new one is opening at Penn station in NYC.
Next, go to the Coney Islnd Nathan's and order a hmaburger. You will immediately understand why I remain puzzled why Nathan's doesn't own the franchise world.

Next, Lums Hotdogs originated in a bar on Collins ave in Miami Beach. Similar to Ball Park Franks they soaked in hot Budweiser for 20 years and were served in a bun with greasy onion rings. They were fantastic. They spread like wildfire in the south, were bought out by a corporation that drained them.

Next, most disappointing is that Oscar Meyer is allowed to exist. No taste

Sabrett's hotdog Soaked in hot water for 20 years but sold with greatest onion relish in world. The mustard and the onion relish keep Sabrett's in business.

Only way to cook

Sabrett's Hot water for 20 years. ball Park same hot water or beer. Nathans--Do not charcole grill!! Sort of frie them for more than 20 min. Only getting them to burst from heat releases the flavor. I know I made them in Coney Island for ten years. don't cook 'em fast, Cook em long till skin bursts after gettin them crusty.

Next, Dodger Dogs need investigation. there is a stand at Turner Field that makes hotdogs very much like those of the 40s-50s. Try em.

Last but not least Hebrew National. Most over rated in world. My other Jewish mother in a bllind taste test ranked them lowest. she was shocked when I told her they were HN.

Boar's Head brands have super deli meats. Their hot dogs should be considered in the league of Nathan's and cooked the same way.

Love me Glenn G formerly of NYC now Atlanta

One last thing. Other than mustard pickle relish, onion relish or saurkraut, ANYTHING ELSE ON A HOT DOG IS A SIN! Remember Darogenese Chapter three verse 28, "And yohmeebay ate the hot dog with chilli cheese and his wife MeebekraZee ate her's with Cole Slaw and doth god smoke them down. Yeah he tirned them into pillars of Kryptonite

Other great dogs

Postby New Buddy-CK » Thu Jul 31, 2003 12:50 pm

Does no one here like the Hebrew national dogs?

How about Ted's Hot Dog's out of Buffalo with Spicy Mustard, Kraut and Celery Salt?

There is one here in Arizona in Tempe. Great big Piles of Onion Strings to go with it with Malt vinegar and Celery Salt.

Of course the preferred way to do Dogs here in Arizona is Grilled with Mustard, diced Onions, and Jalepenos.

I got a kick out of the Ketchup comment. it is so true.

What is that onion sauce made out of and what is it Like? I have never heard of it, but then again, I am a 5th genreation Arizonan who has been to the east coast once, and only through Chicago, but never visited.

hotdogs

Postby ggingold » Thu Aug 21, 2003 11:25 am

went to Turner Field last week in Atlanta. didn't have a Brave dog or anything like that. Ate a hotdog from the generic hot dog stand. It was not boiled for 12 hrs but grilled. It WAS the orginal Polo Grounds Ebbetts Field Yankee Stadium Harry M Stevens (aka ARAMark) hot dog!! Actually tasted better becasue it was grilled. But hell the southerners down here had yellow mustard not Guldens spicey brown. This is the price I pay for the life I choose.

Hot Dogs in the Northwest

Postby emj » Thu Aug 21, 2003 11:14 pm

The place to go in Seattle is Matt's Famous Chili Dogs. He has been around for quite a while. He has the best chili dogs I have ever tasted. He also serves Chicago Style Hot Dogs. Give his Tamales a try too.

if in Boston area, go to Top Dog of Rockport - great dogs with numerous varieties, good sides (onion bricks, chili/cheese fries, even fried candy barrs), great location in a nice little sea-side town and good atmosphere. and, if the red sox hit a home run while you're ordering, the order is free!

New Jersey Hot Dogs

Postby bill123777 » Wed Nov 19, 2003 5:09 pm

I haven't read anything about Dogs in Jersey. I've had Hot Dogs form all over the country, many of which are very good but, there is nothing as good as the fried Hot Dogs they serve in New Jersey. Unfortunately, I now live in Atlanta and I have not yet found a Hot dog joint which I really like. :(
