Sam Adams Weiss Beer
By Belly Buddy John Carroll

Samuel Adams
If I were old enough to vote back in the 18th century, then Sam Adams would have been my first choice for president. Not only was the man a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and the Governor of Massachusetts, but quite the brew master in his time. He was also responsible for organizing the Boston Tea Party- which I'm sure started out as a little alcohol-fueled mayhem.

His legacy is the fine brand of beers named for him and produced by Jim Koch (pronounced Cook) and company. Although Boston Lager is the most common of Sam Adams brews, the company has crafted a dozen or so fine beers inspired by the many different beers of the world. Their latest endeavor is Sam Adams Weiss Beer which is a very authentic reproduction of a Bavarian wheat beer. Its crisp taste parallels many of the finest German wheat beers like Spaten, but it is very wheaty- which is good if you're obsessed with fiber intake (I know I am) but bad if you are solely accustomed to high viscosity lagers made simply for guzzling.

Wheat beers are meant to be enjoyed slowly like a dense stout. But unlike a hearty stout which may be meal unto itself, weiss beer goes well with the right food- brat wurst, sauerbraten or even jaegerschnitzel.

My only criticism of this beer is the size of the bottle. Most German weiss biers come in 20 or 22 ounce bottles, again so that it may be enjoyed slowly. But Sam's weiss beer comes only in the standard 12 ounce bottle. I guess this is to be expected since producing special bottles for a new beer that may not sell could be a costly mistake. Maybe if I drink enough of this tasty bier they'll continue to produce it and heed my request for bigger bottles- it may be tough for me to do this myself... be a pal and help me out mein freund.

One last thing- it is okay to drink weiss beer with a slice (not wedge) of lemon in it. The lemon really compliments the taste and is a Bavarian tradition- it will not make you look gay... extending your pinky while drinking from your traditional Bavarian stein will. Or so I've been told.

Editor's note: It turns out that Samuel Adams new Weiss Beer is already an award winner at the 2002 Brewing Industry International Awards, announced February 18th. The 2002 judging was last week in Burton upon Trent, London, England. The actual medal rankings and will not be revealed until the April 16 ceremony in London. The awards are sometimes considered "the Oscars of the brewing industry."
