Singha
By Belly Buddy Mark Higgins

I've heard some first hand stories of the debauchery that goes on in Thailand. To be honest, they are a little too debaucherous for my taste. I'll stick with Mardi Gras or a good old fashioned St. Patrick's Day Parade any day. There is a level of baseness that I don't know if I ever want to experience. I'm sure there are many beautiful parts of Thailand, but those are not the stories I tend to hear. OK, so much for my hear-say travelogue. I wrote that to write this...

Recently I ate Thai food for the first time. I usally don't stray far from the basics; beef, pork, chicken, corn and potatoes- but at the Thai restaurant where I dined I was offered a premium Thai beer... a lager named Singha. Since I like beer, I figured a new one is always worth a try.

Produced by the Boon Rawd Brewery Co., Ltd., Singha has a golden color that is darker than your typical lagers. It produces a nice head when poured but quickly levels out, however "fizzy" is probably a good way to describe the texture of Singha. It has a very hoppy flavor with a lingering bitterness in the after-taste. It went great with the chicken I had (which was very spicy) but I'm not sure it would hold up if you drink it without a meal- I had two with dinner but don't think I would order it without food.

I enjoyed Singha with my meal, but I don't think I will be travelling to Thailand to experience the beer first hand.

9 beth» Wonderful for putting out the fire thai food leaves in your mouth.

4 Donny Boy» Spent a few weeks in Thailand in the early 80's. This beer gave a ferocious headache & a powerful hangover. We were told the reason was it used formaldehyde as a preservative. Switched to Thai whiskey, coke & prostitutes.

9 Rice Cracka» Though not as cheap or as potent as Beer Chang, it definitely tastes better. Great on a hot Thai day or cool evening. Nice bite and a killer buzz.

10 kyle» The bitterness is the best part, and it gives you a nice buzz, I love it. This and Carlsberg were the 2 most popular beers in Thailand, so I'd switch-hit for a bit, but then it was nothing but Singha's!!!

7 Kim» Drank this beer often is Singapore, its a NASTY beer but it gives a geat buzz. Has a pronounced chemical taste, an awful balance, and a lot of fiz. In 90+ degree weather on the streets of Singapore it is what it is.

10 Mai Pen Rai» Best beer under the sun, been trying to get my hands on a case for some time now.

10 pmoodang nyc» breakfast lunch and dinner helped put out some spicy meals. Smooth and tasty.

11 Shuggaloaf» Maybe the taste, or the fact it has the strength of 3 motral beers, what BeerSingBoy said about pheremones(didnt notice until u wrote it) or Thai Seafood and Grill Waldorf, MD. But it's my personal favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10 REB» Without question one, of the best beers in the world, ....the reasearch continues

8 ME Oil Field Trash» Just moved back to the US after many years in Saudi, where I decompressed regularly in Thailand. Singha is definitely the best Thai beer. The 'beer Sing" I get here seems to be higher in alchohol but still has the great Singha taste.

Quotes & Toasts
"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.'"
-Jack Handey.
